Welcome to Perigueux

Périgueux is the county capital of the Dordogne (its Préfecture) a territory roughly corresponding to the ancient Perigord. Situated in the sunny south west, it is a great place to base yourself for holiday in one of the most beautiful regions of France. See below some of the many unique sites of interest that may interest you if you are coming here for your holidays.

MODERN PERIGUEUX:

Now a bustling regional city, Perigueux with a charming old quarter of narrow streets and sunny squares, excluding the CAP towns, has a population of approaching 40,000 and so while it is the centre of things in the Dordogne, it remains a very livable size.

THE C.A.P.
Perigueux
is the principal town of the CAP, a metropolitan area of 13 towns centred on Périgueux. The 12 other towns in the CAP are Antonne et Trigonant, Champcevinel, Chancelade, La Chapelle - Gonaguet, Château l'Évêque, Coulounieix Chamiers, Coursac, Escoire, Marsac sur l'Isle, Notre Dame de Sanilhac, Razac sur l'Isle and Trélissac.

IN THE AREA:
The villages and towns of Bourdeilles, Saint Jean de Côle, Brantôme, Limeuil, Sarlat, Les Eyzies, Le Bugue;

WORLD HERITAGE SITE:
The UNESCO World heritage sites of the Lascaux Caves and the region around Les Eyzies,

A LONG HISTORY:
Périgueux itself is the result of a merger of two burghs in 1240, a bourgeois town called Puy Saint Front and the bishops city situated but a few hundred meters from each other. The new entity, Périgueux, was named after the ancient Gaulish tribe that lived in the locality.

PERIGUEUX OLD QUARTER:
Old Périgueux is a very attractive area. Rue Limogeanne, the narrow cobbled street that winds its way down through this historical quarter is the principal commercial street of the old quarter. The old quarter is largely pedestrianised, with some access for service vehicles. click HERE for a map of the Old Quarter...

PERIGUEUX ROMAN PAST:
The Tower of Vesunna, about 22m in diameter and about 30m in height, stands at what was formerly the centre of the city, where all the chief streets met. Click HERE to learn more about the Roman remains and Museum.

PERIGUEUX MUSEUMS:
Périgueux has 39 classified historical sites and its two main museums are the traditional 'Musée de Perigord' and the modern 'Musée de Vésunna'. Click HERE to learn more about the four museums in Périgueux.
